Overview

The EAL Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring that the specific English as an Additional Language needs are provided for in an efficient and effective manner. The EAL Coordinator liaises with and manages a team of EAL teachers to ensure that EAL student needs are met. This is achieved in collaboration with other staff members including class teachers, the Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCO) and the leadership team.  The role will include providing professional guidance in the area of second language acquisition and appropriate in-class and withdrawal support structures in order to secure appropriate provision for affected students.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:  
Leadership of the Department
  • Remain up to date with current best practices in the EAL field. 
  • A working knowledge of The Bell Foundation Framework for School is advantageous.
  • Manage the EAL team of teachers and support class teachers.
  • Lead weekly EAL team meetings to support continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate the effective induction for new EAL staff.
  • Develop, implement and review the EAL policy and oversee its day-to-day operation.
  • Effectively utilise all aspects of the school performance management cycle and analysis of data to drive improvement.
  • Liaise with the finance department with regard to communication to support individual billing
  • In liaison with an SLT member, maintain links with the ALN Coordinator (or similar) in all of our sections to support a wrap-around care ethos.
Teaching and Learning (This position carries a teaching load)
  • Deliver high-quality EAL support through in-class, small group, and 1:1 teaching.
  • Collaborate closely with class teachers and leaders to co-plan, co-teach, and model effective language-support strategies.
  • Support teachers in developing inclusive classroom practices and appropriately adapted resources. 
  • Monitor and analyse progress, ensuring that learning targets are clear and regularly reviewed.
  • Assess and track student progress, using data to inform planning and interventions.
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to student reports and family communication
  • Provide guidance to families to support language development at home.
  • Contribute to inclusive teaching practices and school-wide professional learning.
  • Uphold the school's mission, values, and safeguarding policies.
  • Participate actively in school events, meetings, and initiatives that support student learning and inclusion.
Assessment, Recording and Reporting
  • Support EAL teachers to assess flagged and/or referred EAL students using appropriate assessment tools ensuring synergy between assessments carried out by Admissions and those employed by EAL teachers.
  • Support EAL teachers in tracking EAL student progress utilising our bespoke tracking tool.
  • Utilise moderation to ensure consistency in the application of The Bell Foundation descriptors.
  • Monitor the English as an Additional Language Individual Plans(EALIPSs) and provide guidance to EAL staff in this regard.
EAL Register, Admissions liaison, billing and maintenance of records
  • Liaise with Admissions regarding new entrants requiring EAL support.
  • Maintain the EAL register and ensure that it is accessible to staff.
  • Observe and monitor EAL referrals and children already on the EAL register.
  • In conjunction with a member of SLT, liaise with the Finance department regarding billing.
  • Ensure that the EAL department maintains an organised and efficient electronic and in-class filing system.
Parent Communication
  • Monitor to ensure that EAL teachers communicate with parents of students regarding entry and exit to the EAL programme.
  • Provide Parent Information sessions at the beginning of each academic year and as appropriate.
  • Attend Parents' Meetings where relevant in order to inform parents of progress.  
  • Contribute to reviews of students' progress, as appropriate.
  • Ensure that parental enquiries are responded to expeditiously.
Performance Development
  • To follow the British Primary Section's (BPS) Performance development cycle. 
  • Monitor and evaluate teacher performance in the EAL department.
  • In liaison with SLT, to plan for professional development based on the needs of the team
Consistency and Transition
  • Ensure EAL support is consistent across classes and year-groups.
  • Liaise with the British Section High School (BSHS) to ensure effective transition arrangements from Year 6 to Year 7.
Qualifications
  • Recognised teaching qualification and TESOL/TEFL/ELL qualification or additional EAL-specific training (highly desirable)
  • Valid government-issued teaching certification.
  • Experience teaching EAL learners in a primary/international school setting.
  • Strong understanding of language acquisition principles and inclusive pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of the British National Curriculum and IPC framework (desirable).
  • Skilled in differentiation, scaffolding, and using assessment to inform instruction.
  • Strong communication and collaborative skills
  • Competence in using digital tools to support learning and assessments
  • Culturally responsive and committed to supporting diverse learners.
