Job Title
: Director, Cancer Genomics & Molecular Medicine
Location
: Taipei, Taiwan - Koo Foundation Sun Yat-Sen Cancer Center (KFSYSCC)
About Us:
Founded in 1990 as the first cancer‑only institution in Taiwan, KFSYSCC treats thousands of new oncology patients a year and has earned national recognition for outcome‑driven, multidisciplinary care. Over three decades we have built one of Asia's most comprehensive research ecosystems: a biobank holding more than 30,000 tumor specimens (13 organ groups) plus more than 3,900 matched normal tissues, an Illumina NextSeq 2000 sequencer, and disease-focused teams that integrate surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, data scientists and engineers in a single decision loop. A Molecular Medicine Building is being planned that will co‑locate sequencing, single‑cell and spatial‑omics platforms, GMP‑ready cell‑processing suites, and open collaboration lofts—creating the physical and cultural space for the next era of precision oncology.
Role Summary
:
This role suits a physician‑scientist who already leads people and programs and is ready to scale an institution‑wide genomics function. You will finalize a five‑year Genomics and Molecular Medicine roadmap, stabilize and expand our NextSeq 2000 plus TSO‑500 pipeline, and convert multi‑omic insights into routine tumor‑board decisions. You will have a protected operating budget and dedicated space so you can focus on vision, execution, and talent.
Management Scope
:
- Direct reports:
~10 across wet lab, bioinformatics, quality, and operations, with planned growth. - Budget:
own annual opex and prioritized capex for platforms, LIMS, and informatics. - Governance:
run a cross‑functional steering group with clinical, pathology, and IT stakeholders; set quarterly objectives and key results (OKRs) and report to hospital leadership.
Key Responsibilities
:
- Strategic Leadership:
Co‑author and drive a five‑year plan linking discovery science, clinical genomics, digital pathology and data science; align milestones with hospital strategy and national cancer policy. - Regulatory and Quality:
Lead Taiwan Accreditation Foundation validation and Ministry of Health and Welfare approval for oncology NGS assays starting with TSO‑500; build and maintain SOPs, QC dashboards, and audit readiness. - People Leadership:
Recruit, onboard, and develop scientists, technologists, and analysts; set goals, conduct reviews, and build a high‑trust, reproducible culture. - Clinical Integration:
Design pipelines that feed genomic, transcriptomic and epigenomic data into tumor boards and prospective clinical trials, leveraging structured cancer-pathology reports to shorten the bench-to-bedside loop in real time. - Core‑facility Stewardship:
Operate, optimize and strategically expand a comprehensive genomics core equipped with an Illumina NextSeq 2000, an Affymetrix GeneChip system and a Thermo Fisher QuantStudio Absolute Q digital-PCR platform, while charting the roadmap for future long-read, single-cell and spatial-omics technologies. - External engagement:
Represent KFSYSCC in international consortia, industry partnerships and conferences; secure multi‑year funding from competitive grants, philanthropy and strategic partners.
Qualifications
:
- MD or MD/PhD with 5 to 10 years post training and clear evidence of leading people and programs in genomics.
- Minimum two years of direct line management with responsibility for hiring, performance reviews, and day‑to‑day coaching of at least three direct reports.
- Demonstrated competency as a mentor, leader, and manager: recruits and retains high‑performing teams; sets goals and development plans; delivers candid feedback; manages performance and promotions; builds a psychologically safe, inclusive culture; resolves conflict; leads through change.
- Operational track record running Illumina‑based NGS in a clinical or translational setting, including assay validation, pipeline oversight, and delivery to agreed service levels.
- Experience with budget ownership, vendor selection, contracts or statements of work, and cross‑functional project governance.
- Taiwan physician license and authorization to serve as final signatory on clinical molecular and genomics reports.
- Strategic thinker with the communication skills to align clinicians, engineers, policymakers and philanthropists around a shared vision.
- Evidence of grant capture, industry collaboration, or technology transfer.
- Fluent in Mandarin and working proficiency in English
What We Offer
:
- Start‑up package with protected operating budget, guaranteed salary support, and dedicated laboratory and office space.
- Immediate access to the NextSeq TSO-500 workflow and priority expansion into single-cell and spatial-omics platforms.
- A mission‑driven culture where patient impact—not profit—defines success, backed by leadership committed to your growth and the program's long‑term sustainability.
